Peer Mediators

Peer Mediation has a high profile at Prestbury St Mary’s. During the Autumn Term Mrs Hopton, our Peer Mediation Leader, trains all Y6 in conflict management and also gives time for the children to explore important areas such as listening skills, reading body language and the impact of positive language.

Our core Christian values of respect, love, perseverance, forgiveness, honesty and responsibility are integral to the programme.

Peer Mediators work in pairs during break and lunchtime. The Mediators are placed on a weekly rota with a pair of mediators on duty for one session a week. They are highly visible in the playground, wearing their distinctive blue jackets. During break and lunchtimes, children can seek out the support and advice of the Peer Mediators, who will attempt to resolve any conflicts that arise.

Y6 really enjoy being peer mediators and, by helping other children, it is their opportunity to give something back to their school community.

What do Peer Mediators do?

  • Give all children a chance to tell their side of the story
  • Allow them to make their own decisions
  • Give them the opportunity to find a solution to their problems which everyone accepts and thinks is fair.

Peer Mediators do not:

  • Replace existing ways we have of managing disputes in school
  • Break up fights
  • Take sides
  • Tell people what to do.
