Allotment Club BBQ - an end of term treat! (31 images)

To celebrate the end of the first year of Allotment Club, we enjoyed a BBQ where we sampled some of the wonderful vegetables we have grown this year. We tasted new and sauteed potatoes, French beans, cucumber and courgettes marinated in soy sauce and garlic. Jonathan Wye (one of our ex-parents who has developed the Federation allotment and leads our Allotment Club) also cooked up some sausages to go with our vegetables - it was delicious! We would like to thank Jonathan for all his time and commitment that has made Allotment Club as successful as it is.

Y4JM visit Welsh Bicknor (226 images)

Year Four’s residential visit to Welsh Bicknor has once again been a highlight of the year. Our three days were packed from morning ‘til night with exciting adventures, fun activities, delicious food and brilliant team work! To support our Science work on Living Things and their Habitats, we became animal detectives searching for signs of wildlife. We also took time to explore our values of Peace through sensory activities in the woods and Creativity with a natural art project. A demanding hike took us up into glorious sunshine on top of the hill where we built some rather impressive shelters. Our evenings were filled with very enjoyable, if a little sticky, bread making and a well-earned movie night. We finished our visit with challenging teamwork games like the Giant Marble Run and an archery session, both brilliantly run by the YHA staff. There were many weary-looking, faces on the return journey, but every one of them was wearing a big smile.

Y4CL visit to Welsh Bicknor (85 images)

After weeks (if not months!) of anticipation, Year 4 have taken part in a tremendous three- day residential visit to Welsh Bicknor. Our time was packed from morning to night with fantastic activities and experiences. Much of the learning during the visit supported this term’s Science work about Living Things. We had the chance to explore the forest habitat and search for the wildlife it supports, we then explored the local environment further with an adventurous hike and some very popular den building. Back at the Youth Hostel, the team took very good care of us with delicious food and fun activities like bread making. They also led us in a selection of challenges, from archery to a giant marble run, that put tough demands on our teamwork and communication. We came back, exhausted, muddy and full of wonderful memories of our time away together.

We are the Champions - Y6 Boys win the Cheltenham Primary Football League! (39 images)

What a final it was! Playing against Naunton Park, it was action all the way. Prestbury scored first thanks to a brilliant goal and by the second half we were leading 1:0. Naunton Park rallied with a fantastic second half goal and by full time it was a draw. A nail biting extra time period followed and close to the end of the match, Prestbury scored the winning goal. Team Prestbury shone through as our values of Perseverance and Responsibility were clear to see. The boys were cheered on by parents and staff and we couldn't be more proud of our team. Well done boys!

Girls' Cluster Football Festival (25 images)

On Wednesday 21st February two girls teams represented the school at the annual Cleeve Cluster Girls Football Festival. The girls played some amazing football in the group stages and both teams qualified for the semi-finals! Unfortunately this meant that the teams had to play each other for a place in the final! The game was a draw and the festival organisers had to go back to the results in the group stage to separate the teams! Prestbury B played Bishops Cleeve in the final and Prestbury A played Gotherington in the 3rd/4th place play off. Prestbury B lost 1-0 in the final and Prestbury A drew 1-1 in the other game resulting in Prestbury being runners up and joint 3rd place out of ten teams, a fantastic result for the school! Well done girls!

Y5 K'Nex Workshop! (27 images)

The children in Year 5 took part in a challenging K’nex workshop. This involved them having to both design and create a working fairground ride using K’nex. This, however, was only part of the challenge as once created, the rides were then coded to move at different speeds, change direction, play music and even have lights flashing on and off. Enjoy the variety of designs!

Ideally all clothing that comes to school is labelled with your child's name...but when it's not, I will photograph items and put them in this gallery. If you spot an item, please come into school and let me know. Any item not collected within a month will be taken to the local charity shop. Mrs Hopton

‘Down to Earth’ - The Kinetic Theatre Company visits school (5 images)

What would happen if a race of alien ducks came to Earth and used a Dalek (planted in a stereotypical northern manufacturing office) to steal all of our planet’s water? Well that was the plot context through which the children learned some science on Monday 22nd January. We were able to take advantage of a last minute opportunity to enjoy a musical comedy show delivered by the Kinetic Theatre Company. All classes attended and the children had a great time, as well as learning about aspects of the solar system, shadows and the water cycle. It was fun, if a little ‘quackers’!

Whilst there, they took part in a workshop which demonstrated the relationship between the Earth and the Moon, and their place in the solar system, and were awed by a 3D planetarium show which visited our nearest planetary neighbours. As well as this, the children were able to explore the fascinating exhibits on offer around the museum.

Y4 create Roman Onagers! (52 images)

As part of their D&T work Year 4 have gone on the rampage with their very own Roman siege engines. The children found out all about Celtic King Caractacus’s escape to a well-fortified hill fort and designed their model weapons to effectively attack the enemy forces. Making the model onagers (a type of siege engine with a torsion-sprung lever that could fire huge boulders) required a lot of skills. The children learned to accurately measure, mark, saw and join wood. The project culminated with testing of the children’s final products; each class launched an all-out attack on model targets representing the runaway king in his hill fort.

Y4 have an amazing time at Chedworth Roman Villa (83 images)

Our visit to Chedworth Roman Villa was divided into three fascinating parts. The excellent staff gave us a guided tour of the remains and helped us imagine our way back 2,000 years to when Chedworth was a busy, wealthy Roman residence. In the education centre, we became archaeologists, examining and sorting genuine Roman artefacts from the site - we even touched the fingerprints left in an ancient tile by a naughty Roman child! There was hard work, too, as we were temporarily ‘enslaved’ and taught to produce medicine bags for our Roman owners. It was amazing to find out about the Roman history of our own local area.

What a busy first term for football! The boys teams have competed in both the league and the Albert Dix football tournament and the girls have competed in the girls football tournament. Both the boys' A and B teams have remained unbeaten all term. Both our tournament teams had great afternoons competing in the girls football tournament and the Albert Dix football. At the end of term one our cross country team represented the school at our local Cleeve Cluster Cross Country Festival. The festival comprised of individual and team races and involved five local schools. The weather was kind and all the children ran fantastically well and we came third overall. Y3 went to Cleeve School to play Circle Dodgeball! They were all trained in the art of Dodgeball and then played several games - we had a great time!

Trinity Day at Prestbury St Mary's Junior (43 images)

On Thursday 8th June, the whole school spent a very busy and creative day learning more about the Holy Trinity as part of our RE curriculum. After learning about God the father, Jesus - God’s son and the Holy Spirit, the children created some fantastic artwork and certainly had a great time doing so. The topic naturally generated lots of very good and interesting questions – many of which were too tricky to answer! We were delighted that two of our governors, Rev. Liz Palin and Mrs Carol Gunn were able to join us for the morning and experience all that was going on. They were very impressed with what deep thinkers your children are! The work will soon be displayed in the hall – do come and take a look.

Year 6 were very excited to have 28 Japanese students come to spend a morning with us. They gave us a presentation about school life in Japan and then our children had a go at different activities such as origami. We were so proud of how welcoming and friendly our children were and they certainly deserved their reward of different types of Japanese sweets and chocolate!

On Tuesday 9th February the whole school celebrated Shrove Tuesday by having a sponsored pancake flip in the school hall. The PTFA arrived at school armed with frying pans and pancakes and every pupil had the chance to see how many flips they could do in 1 minute. Even the teachers had a go! We all had a ‘flippin’ fantastic time whilst raising money for the school.

Sounds like a lot of fun! (21 images)

As part of our science, Year 4 took part in sound workshops. Mrs Follis, a science expert from STEMworks visited us and led some fascinating activities. We played sound bingo and then set off around the school using data loggers to measure sound levels in different places (it was a perfect chance to show our Christian value of trust, too). Back in class we used computer software to look at the ‘stories’ that line graphs could tell us about what we had recorded and asked our own questions about our graphs. We learnt lots about what sound is, how it is made and how it can be measured.

Romans Attack! (24 images)

What do you do if you are a Roman general hunting down your enemy the Rebel King Caractacus and you eventually track him down he has prepared for battle in a well-protected hill fort? Use your technology to build roman siege engines, of course! Year 4 have been researching, testing and building their own model roman onagers (catapults) ready for a final assault on the King’s defences.

Y4 Experience Christmas (14 images)

Year Four sought refuge from the heavy rain in St Mary’s church where the ministry team had put together a range of activities, from role play to creating model gifts for the baby Jesus, to help the children ‘Experience Christmas’. Everyone enjoyed moving from station to station around the church and exploring the Christmas story from new perspectives. By the time we headed home, the children had so much to talk about they barely noticed the downpour at all.

May the force be with you! (13 images)

Y5CT investigated the effects of air resistance and realised that it’s not just liquids that push against you when you move through them. Air does too, even though you can’t see it. We battled with the force of air resistance as we tried to run across the playground with large sheets of card. It was hard work!

Y3 Christmas production of (56 images)

Year Three have been working really hard on their Christmas Production, ‘Silent Night’. The children take the audience back to 18th Century Austria, where the people of a small village prepare their Christmas Eve pageant, only to discover some naughty mice have nibbled on the church organ! The children go on to tell the audience the story of how the carol, ‘Silent Night’ came to be, through comedy, wonderful acting and uplifting music and song. Congratulations Year Three on a captivating, heart-warming production.

Paper Spinners – x marks the spot! (8 images)

On Wednesday 9th December, Y5CT planned a fair test to investigate how paper spinners fell to the floor. We decided which variables we would change and which ones we would keep the same. Once we had decided what we would measure, it was time to get on with the investigation. Most of us decided to change either the weight or size of the paper spinners and to measure the speed with which it fell to the floor. Some of us decided to investigate the accuracy with which the paper spinner fell by observing how close each spinner came to landing on an ‘X’ on the ground. We will be using our results to talk about the effects of air resistance.

Y4 visit Chedworth Roman Villa (30 images)

Year Four’s day at Chedworth Roman Villa proved to be rather busy. We worked as archaeologists, sorting and classifying genuine artefacts (bones, tiles and shells and more) from Roman Britain. Our work had just begun as we were temporarily enslaved, given tunics and slave tags to wear and forced to grind the herbs needed to make medicine bags for our Roman masters. On a guided tour of the Villa, we took in the beautifully mosaic dining rooms, the baths, a scared spring and the impressive hypocaust heating system, before finishing with the ‘pleasure’ of viewing a Roman latrine. It was a fantastic chance to show off our impressive knowledge of life in Roman Britain and discover even more about this fascinating part of our local history.

Year 5 Variety Show is a great success! (42 images)

In April, Year Five entertained the school and their parents with a spectacular, hour-long variety show. In keeping with their theme for the term – Earth and Beyond – the narrators introduced each acts as representing various fictional planets and galaxies. Costumes and music throughout the show also reflected the space theme. Other than a whole year-group song at the beginning and end of the show, all acts were entirely the choice of the pupils involved. The audience was treated to true variety with live performances including recitals, songs, dances, instrument performances and jokes, as well as pre-recorded videos of extreme sports, comedy and animation. The standard and variety of talent on display was amazing and the as well as being great fun for all involved, the event really helped to build the children’s confidence and enjoyment of performing arts. You might even say it was ‘out of this world’!

Y4JM Welsh Bicknor Residential (69 images)

After weeks (if not months!) of anticipation, Year 4 have taken part in a tremendous three- day residential visit to Welsh Bicknor. Our time was packed from morning to night with fantastic activities and experiences. Much of the learning during the visit supported this term’s Science work about Living Things. We had the chance to explore the forest habitat and search for the wildlife it supports, and then take samples back to base to examine more closely under microscopes. We explored the demands of the local environment further with an adventurous hike and some very popular den building. Back at the Youth Hostel, the team took very good care of us with delicious food and fun activities like bread making. They also led us in a selection of challenges, from a ‘night line’ to a giant marble run, that put tough demands on our teamwork and communication. (For some, though, the biggest challenge of the week was getting the cover onto their duvet!) We came back, exhausted, muddy and full of wonderful memories of our time away together.
