ETHOS AND MINDSET
At Prestbury St Mary’s our writing curriculum is progressively structured with learning building on learning. In line with our school vision that we are, ‘Developing Remarkable People’ our writing curriculum is designed to ensure children are powerful communicators. This begins with a focus on foundational knowledge in the early years. Communication and language, early reading, reading comprehension and early writing are carefully planned so that children have the firm foundations they need to communicate powerfully through their writing. Initially, children are taught oral composition and transcription separately setting up children for success by avoiding complex tasks until they are ready. We believe children’s learning should progress as quickly as possible but as slow as necessary.
In the Early Years writing and mark making provides a vital opportunity for children to interpret, explore and communicate meaning. Writing skills and knowledge are enhanced by ensuring a child's physical development is secure. They must have developed key muscles, strength and posture through large and small movements. The ability to write relies upon so many areas of the curriculum working cohesively together. A love of writing will come through providing as many purposeful and creative opportunities as possible to apply these skills. Writing is a powerful way to express ideas and share these with others. When scaffolded, nurtured and enriched through quality adult interactions, children will value its importance and influence well beyond the Early Years.
Children’s learning is underpinned by carefully constructed frameworks to support assessment and lesson design. Progression documents guide teachers to ensure objectives for spelling, handwriting, punctuation, grammar, composition and vocabulary are taught cumulatively. Regular CPD for staff, led by experts, ensures that lessons are impactful.
Writing opportunities are designed so that children are equipped with a writing skill set they are able to use in a variety of circumstances. Writing skills are applied throughout the curriculum and children are supported to apply skills and strategies through a range of genres. Writing stimuli are exciting and engaging and as such provide a platform for children to communicate their thoughts powerfully.
